Louth County Council, through the Louth Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP), has successfully delivered a series of Property Marking Scheme events in Ardee, Roche, Omeath and at the Dundalk Show.
An estimated 3,000 items were marked at recent events under Cooley Community Alert’s Property Marking Scheme. The scheme was delivered in partnership with Louth LCSP, An Garda Síochána and local communities and shows how a joint approach to community safety can help prevent crime, support the recovery of stolen property and create safer neighbourhoods across County Louth.
At each event, residents and businesses marked valuable items such as tools, bicycles, machinery and electronic devices with unique identifying codes. These markings deter theft and help identify property if it is recovered. Warning stickers were also provided to show that items are marked and traceable.
Strong attendance at all events shows that people are willing to take simple steps to protect their property. It also highlights the impact of community-led action, supported by agencies working together.
Alan Minto, Community Safety Administrator, Louth LCSP, said:
“This initiative shows the real impact of a collaborative approach to community safety. LCSP’s role is to bring together communities, Gardaí and local groups to deliver practical solutions like this. By working in partnership, we can support people to protect their property and make our communities safer.”
Garda Kevin Cleary with An Garda Síochána said:
“Initiatives like the Property Marking Scheme show how partnership and community engagement can play a key role in preventing crime. Marked property is less likely to be targeted and easier to return if stolen. We are very encouraged by the strong level of public participation.”
Michael Muckian with Cooley Community Alert added:
“Working with Louth LCSP and An Garda Síochána has helped us grow this scheme and reach more people across the county. We are seeing real benefits, including lower levels of theft and greater reassurance in our communities. People feel more confident and empowered knowing they are taking action to protect their property.”
Members of the public are encouraged to attend upcoming Property Marking events or to contact the Louth LCSP if they wish to host an event in their area.
