Dundalk Chamber made a written submission on the importance of the DKIT and Queens strategic partnership ahead of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the Technological Universities All Island University Group (Amendment) Bill 2026.

This Bill proposes to amend the Technological Universities Act 2018, paving the way for Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) to enter a strategic partnership with Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and transition into a Technological University College.

As outlined in our submission, we strongly endorsed the legislation, highlighting it as a “landmark moment” that establishes a top-tier university footprint right on our doorstep.

As the M1 Corridor experiences rapid industrial growth across high-value sectors like biopharma, digital tech, engineering, and logistics, local businesses require immediate access to a university-educated workforce and this legislation and strategic partnership does that.

This is an imaginative piece of legislation that turns the concept of a ‘Shared Island’ into a tangible educational reality,” said John McGahon, CEO. “We fully endorse the Bill, congratulate Minister James Lawless TD and the Government, and look forward to seeing it progress efficiently through the Oireachtas.
