The Revised Programme for Government (October 2009) indicates that a SMART Town, with greater than 1000 homes, will be selected to trial SMART Energy Technology.

The local Dundalk Institute of Technology addresses sustainability in all 3 spheres that make up the concept, these being Evironmental, Social and Economic.

Managed by the National Sustainable Transport Office within the Department of Transport, Smarter Travel is a transport policy for the period to 2020 that aims to deliver a sustainable transport future for Ireland.

Sustainable Energy Ireland’s (SEI) sustainable energy programme, Dundalk 2020, a four-square kilometre Sustainable Energy Zone has been created in Dundalk which includes residential, industrial, retail/commercial/leisure buildings, local educational establishments and a hospital.  The zone provides a showcase of some of the innovative technologies, policies and practices that will be needed in order to develop sustainable energy communities in town and cities in Ireland and across Europe.

Louth will be the first age-friendly county in Ireland, and will lead the way for others to follow.  It is an exciting time to be involved in this flagship initiative.
