
With more free time on your hands and more disposable income, you’ll find loads of sporting activities to do in Dundalk!
Dundalk is a top spot for golfers with a great choice of both parkland and links courses in the area which, boasting the dramatic backdrop of the Cooley Peninsula, are popular with golf fanatics and occasional players alike.
Fishing too is a popular past-time and Dundalk is one of the main angling centres in County Louth. There are a number of other well-established angling centres and a host of excellent fishing venues in the surrounding area so you can try game, sea and course angling – whatever you prefer!
Or if you prefer to actually be in the water, Dundalk and its environs is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. County Louth has over 70km of coastline and boasts a number of beautiful beaches (Blackrock beach, Port beach and Temple Town beach are all close by) with adventure centres offering a wide variety of activities and water-sports. Sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and kite-surfing are all popular activities here and you’ll also see jet-skis, water-skiers and banana-boats out in the sea on a regular basis!
For those who prefer team sports, there are local soccer, rugby, GAA and ice hockey teams, all of which are a real focus in the community in Dundalk and a great way to meet new people.
The Cooley Mountains also provide stunning scenery and a great terrain for walking, hiking, running and cycling. The 40km Táin Way is the principle long distance walking route in Louth and the well-known Táin Trail is also a favourite among cyclists. For the more adventurous, abseiling and rock-climbing can both be enjoyed here. Horse-riding and pony-trekking are also popular and there is an equestrian school nearby offering lessons.
Speaking of horses, Dundalk is home to Ireland’s only all-weather, floodlit horse-racing and greyhound stadium. A night at the races is a popular evening out for locals and visitors alike and with top-class dining facilities, three bars and a great atmosphere, you’re guaranteed a great night out.
And for rainy days, indoor activities include: ice-skating at Dundalk Ice Dome which is also home to local ice hockey team the Dundalk Bulls; bowling at Dundalk Sports Bowl; and the JJB Soccer Dome, an indoor soccer facility with over 16 pitches, a soccer academy and state-of-the-art training facilities and leisure activities.
The town’s top-notch gyms and spas also provide the best equipment and facilities for those who want to keep fit or treat themselves to a bit of luxury!
