Dundalk and County Louth has lots on offer for kids of all ages. From summer days on the beach to pony-trekking and activity camps to keep them entertained, you’ll be guaranteed plenty of fun-filled family days out.
Blue Flag Beaches
County Louth has over 70km of coastline with several blue flag sandy beaches, some offering activities and watersports. Close to Dundalk are Blackrock beach, Port beach and Temple Town beach.
Carlingford Adventure Centre
Carlingford Adventure Centre, less than 25 km from Dundalk, offers action-packed days to keep children occupied with over twenty land and water based activities for all ages and abilities. Parents can choose to join in or leave the kids to it, knowing they’re in safe hands. Lessons and courses are available in sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, Canadian canoeing and raft building or you can try your hand at rock climbing, abseiling, orienteering, archery, hill-trekking or on the high ropes. The centre also has a fully-equipped games room. Activity break packages with accommodation are also available and the centre also runs a summer camp for 8-17 year olds.
County Museum
Located in a beautifully restored 18th century warehouse, the award-winning County Museum traces the history of Dundalk and County Louth from the Mesolithic era to the modern day through a variety of interactive displays. With three floors of permanent exhibitions and a changing and extensive programme of temporary displays covering drama, music recitals, storytelling festivals, lecture and film, the museum has something of interest for everyone and is well worth a visit. Kids love the 1966 Heinkel bubble car exhibit!
Dundalk Ice Dome
Dundalk Ice Dome is the largest indoor ice rink in Ireland and offers a range of Ice Skating Sessions, Discos on Ice and Premier League Ice Hockey. Home to Team Ireland and the Dundalk Bulls, the Ice Dome also features a bar, restaurant and shop.
Dundalk Sports Bowl
With 12 lanes of ten-pin bowling, children’s indoor adventure play area, snooker tables, bar and restaurant, a trip to Dundalk Sports Bowl is a guaranteed fun excursion for all the family.
JJB Soccer Dome
This indoor soccer facility has over 16 pitches, a soccer academy and state-of-the-art training facilities and leisure activities.
Pirates Den
This purpose-designed indoor playground consists of a 3-level play area with ball pools, rope bridges, swing ropes, aerial runways and slides. There’s also a soft play baby area for 0-2 year olds with interactive equipment as well as an area especially for toddlers (Over 2’s area).
Proleek Dolmen
Kids love the local legend which believes that if you can throw a coin and make it land on top of the dolmen, you will be granted a wish. This impressive dolmen with cap stone is said to weigh 40 tonnes and can be accessed from the car-park of the Ballymascanlon House Hotel just outside Dundalk.
Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Trekking Centre
Take the kids pony trekking amid the scenic Cooley peninsula for a fun day out! Tuition is available for both adults and children of all levels, from beginners to horse-handling experts. Surrounded by unspoilt natural scenery, sleepy roads mean the treks are safe and enjoyable while the surrounding hills provide a more challenging trek for those who want it.
Stephenstown Pond Carp Fishery & Agnes Burns Visitor Centre
Burns Cottage, just 4 miles from Dundalk, was once the home of Agnes Burns - the sister of Scotland’s National Poet Robert Burns – and her husband William Galt. Agnes dies in 1834 and William died in 1847 and both are buried in Dundalk in St. Nicholas’ Cemetery burial grounds. The centre features a multimedia centre which interprets the lives of Agnes Burns/Galt and her brother Robert and the famous poet’s works and a coffee shop.
Agnes and William built the Stephenstown Pond for the local landlord, Matthew Fortescue and the cottage is adjacent to Stephenstown Pond Amenity Park. Visitors can get pond fishing permits for the carp fishery and there is also a lake, shaded woodland walks, a nature park, children’s play area and picnic area. Open daily, May-Sept, 8.30am-8.30pm and Oct-April, 10am-5pm
Táin Adventure Centre
Situated on a 10 acre site, 15 km from Dundalk, the Táin Adventure Centre offers an extensive outdoor adventure programme for both children and adults. Activities on offer include canoeing, archery, banana skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, orienteering, rock-climbing, orienteering, gorge walking, pier jumping and absailing. The centre also has both indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, tennis courts, an indoor basketball and football area and several games rooms. Accommodation at the centre is also available.
